Herbal Treatments for Under Eye Circles

By Van Le | The eyes may be the windows to the soul, but dark under-eye circles may be the unattractive curtains that scream “look at me!” You can have flawless skin, the right complexion and perfect makeup, but those dark half-circle patches under the eyes can ruin your entire look. The most common cause of dark under-eye circle is exhaustion and lack of sleep, however, genetics, aging and a poor diet can contribute to the problem.
The skin under the eyes is thin and delicate, and any disturbances in the body can cause blood vessels near the surface to dilate. The results can be dramatized and magnified in the area under the eyes, where the skin is thinnest. Fatigue and lack of sleep can cause pale skin, which makes the appearance of dilated blood vessels more obvious.
Also, dark under-eye circles are part of the natural aging process, since the skin becomes more fragile over time. Lack of nutrition can also be a
culprit. Excessive salt, smoking, and vitamin deficiency are all contributing factors. For those who suffer from this condition as a result of genetics, all hope is not lost. There are several natural remedies that can reduce the appearance of dark under-eye circles.
Cucumbers and Tea Bags
There’s a reason why they give you cucumber for your eyes at the spas. Due to its cooling effect, cucumbers refresh the skin and help sooth tired eyes. Place cooled cucumber slices or cotton balls dipped in cucumber juice over the eyes for 15-20 minutes. Teabags contain high amounts of tannin, which reduces discoloration and swelling. Simply place chilled tea bags over the eyes for 15 minutes.
Lemon Juice
Lemon juice helps lighten the skin under the eyes. Combine equal amounts of tomato and lemon juice to the dark areas twice a day, being careful not to get it in your eyes. A mixture of lemon juice and lanolin cream can also help decrease the appearance of dark under-eye circles.
Almond Oil
Almond oil has excellent nourishing properties, and is easily absorbed by the skin. Gently rub the oil in the area under the eyes twice a day for
nourished skin.
Vitamin E
Vitamin E constricts blood vessels from dilating and decreases fluid retention, which lessens the appearance of under-eye circles. Vitamin E’s
antioxidant properties help the skin look vibrant. Break open a Vitamin E capsule and apply it to dark circles daily, and visible improvement can be seen within days.
Although there are no cures for dark under-eye circles, there are several remedies and products available to help reduce its appearance. Treating and Preventing Sunburn

By Van Le | Playing in the sun is not fun if you have to deal with sunburn afterward. On long, hot summer days, we are all tempted to spend the day relaxing
poolside or at the beach, and most of us have suffered the consequences of too much sun exposure. The desire for the perfect golden tan can sometimes lead to sunburns, which is very harmful for the skin. If you suffer from acne, a sunburn can further damage your skin and cause permanent scarring.
Sunburn is a delayed inflammatory reaction when the skin is exposed to excessive ultraviolet radiation. Symptoms of mild sunburn, including redness,
tenderness and pain, often occur a few hours after exposure, and can last for several days. The pain, itching and peeling is the skin’s reaction to excessive UVA and UVB ray exposure. Although the skin needs time to heal, there are some remedies and treatments available to help the skin repair itself.
Get out of the sun
It may sound simple enough, but we often do not realize we are sunburned until it is too late. Since it is a delayed reaction, the full extent and severity
of the burn may not appear until up to 12 hours after exposure. Stop your sun exposure by seeking shade from trees, umbrellas, hats, etc. Drink lots
of water, since sunburn causes dehydration. Get some immediate relief for the pain by adding baking soda to a cool bath, and wear loose clothing that
does not stick to the body.
Reduce the pain
Anti-inflammatory medicine such as Advil or Ibuprofen can help relieve the redness and pain associated with sunburn. Aloe vera is a popular treatment
for sunburn thanks to its ability to moisturize and repair the skin. Apply a moisturizing cream containing Aloe vera, and if possible, apply the gel from
the actual plant to the affected areas. Once the burn heals, the skin will begin to peel and may become itchy. Fight the temptation to pick and
scratch, which can irritate the skin a slow the healing process. Instead, keep the skin moisturized by applying a moisturizing lotion, which can reduce
itching.
Prevent sunburn
The best way to deal with sunburn is to not get one. Sunburn may only seem harmless and temporary, but can have lasting effects on the skin and
overall health. Serious sunburn can cause blisters, shock, lead to cancer and even death if left untreated. Protect yourself from the sun’s harmful rays
by applying sunscreen at least 30 minutes before going outside. Wear loose, protective clothing and avoid staying outside for too long during peak
hours (10am to 4pm), when sunrays are harsh. Choose a sunscreen with SPF of at least 30, and use sun-protection products that contain zinc oxide,
an inorganic ingredient that can deflect UVA rays. Try Vivoderm’s zinc cream, a natural product that can be used as a nontoxic sunscreen.

With the chilly winds already bidding adieu it’s time to take out those sporty shorts and T-shirts for a stroll on the beach or a run in the park You’ve done the push-ups and the crunches in anticipation for the skin-revealing days ahead. You want to look your best, and taking good care of your skin is a part of that. So you spent most of the winter indoors, watching too much TV or gaming? Say goodbye to those baggy eye circles and dull skin by treating yourself to a detoxifying skin mask or a facial scrub and gear up for summer!
Men’s skin care products have always been available, but you may not know much about them yourself. Everyone from late night television hosts to media publications bring up skin care topics and recent dermatological advances have made the skincare market even larger and more complicated. Sorry guys, just when you were comfortable with cologne, now you have to exfoliate! With busy lives and building stress, it may be difficult for today’s modern men to retain the facial charm of their younger days.
Keeping that youthful appearance
Our skin is the largest organ of the body and requires special care. As the saying goes, “A healthy mind in a healthy body’” which means paying attention to your skin is essential to overall health. While it’s expected for women to buy skin care products, men are more laid back and seldom pay attention to facial skincare beyond daily shaving or grooming. Factors like pollution, stress, UV- rays and sun burns can cause severe damage to the inner pores which in the long term results in wrinkling, clogging and drying of the skin. As men reach their 30s and 40s, the skin gets dulled due to the daily process of shaving, excessive time outdoors and exposing the skin to different elements that can lead to blotching, which ultimately takes its toll on overall appearance of the face.

How to Cleanse your Face
I’ve got one thing to say - stop using soap on your face. Many advanced cleansers out there improve your complexion and don’t strip the natural moisture away. Begin with warm water; wash the face with pore refining cleansers that break down the accumulated grits and dirt without drying the skin. Morning is the best time for cleansing, to remove the dead skin and uneven patches that accumulated overnight. Shaving after you shower will reduce rashes, and makes the outer skin layer soft and gives you a smooth finish.
Using Facial Masks
If you have oily or acne prone skin, mud or clay-based masks are great for balancing out your skin. Dry skin will benefit from hydrating masks made from glycerin, honey and oils. Green tea masks are great for soothing skin.
Hydrating and moisturizing
The next most common facial masks are those that either hydrate or moisturize the skin, leaving it feeling silky, smooth and nourished. They will restore the suppleness of your skin by replenishing the water content. Hydrating and moisturizing masks can be used two or three times a week, depending on the dryness of your skin. For those will oilier skin, try a gel based, non-oil mask.
There are no miracle quick-fix homemade solutions. It’s all patience, gracefulness and the right attitude that gets you the results! Reminds me of that comedy ‘The Wedding Crasher’…It all starts with a shave! So, if you want to turn heads with your spiffy new looks this summer – treat your face to the right products.

Masks you can make at home

SPA INDEX PAPAYA PUMPKIN FACIAL
If you have visited spas and resorts in exotic locales such as the Pacific Rim, Bali, Hawaii, and Tahiti, you’ve probably seen an esthetician select and mash fresh fruit in front of you for a fresh-on-the spot enzyme mask. It’s easy to recreate this mask at home — we’ve found a Balinese mask for you which will leave your face fresh and glowing.
2/3 cup fresh papaya, mashed
15 oz. can pure pumpkin
1 egg, beaten
1. Prepare the mask. Cut the papaya in half and scoop out the seeds. Scoop out the papaya fruit and mash it well to eliminate lumps in the mask. Beat the egg until it is frothy. Combine that with the papaya. Add the pumpkin to the egg/papaya mixture and whip together. You can also mix the ingredients in the blender or a food processor for an extra smooth mask.
2. Prepare your face. Wash with your daily cleanser and remove all residual makeup on your skin. Rinse with warm water. It’s very important to have clean skin to ensure you get maximum benefits from the facial.
3. Apply the Mask. Cover your entire face, being careful to avoid the immediate eye area. If you have sensitive skin, test the mixture on your hand before spreading it on your face. You’ll feel some tingling as the enzymes in the pumpkin go to work immediately — gently exfoliating your top layer of skin. It works like a scrub without being abrasive to your skin. Leave the mask on for 10 minutes.
4. Rinse Off Mask. After you’ve relaxed for ten minutes it’s time to rinse. The mask is fairly thick — head for the kitchen sink.
5. Apply Toner & Moisturizer.
LEMON FACIAL MASK
2 tablespoons sour cream
1 teaspoon finely ground oatmeal
1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice
1 drop lemon essential oil
Cucumber slices (optional)
Mix the sour cream, oatmeal, lemon juice and essential together in a bowl. To use, massage over clean face and neck skin and the rest for 10 minutes (with cucumber slices if you have them) over your eyes. Rinse well with warm water and follow with toner and moisturizer.
Always use Lemon Facial Mask immediately for best results — the lemon juice will cause the sour cream to curdle if it is not used quickly.
AVOCADO CARROT CREAM MASK
This mask combines avocados, which are rich in Vitamin E, with carrots, which are high in beta-carotene and antioxidants, and cream, which is high in calcium and protein. These ingredients will rebuild skin collagen, improve tone and texture, and fade age spots.
1 avocado, mashed
1 carrot, cooked and mashed
1/2 cup heavy cream
1 egg, beaten
3 tablespoons honey
Combine all ingredients in a bowl until smooth. Spread gently over your face and neck, and leave in place 10-15 minutes. Rinse with cool water and follow with your favorite toner.
Avocado Dry Skin Masque

Beat the yolk of an egg until it is light and frothy, then add the mashed pulp of a half avocado, blending it well (you may use a blender at this point). Cleanse your face thoroughly before using this masque (or any masque). Spread the avocado mixture over the face and neck evenly; relax on a slant board or bed for about 20 minutes. Remove with clear tepid water and a face cloth, followed by a rinse of cold water or a mild skin lotion. The result should be a marked improvement in skin texture, and all-around revitalizing.
Avocado Oily Skin Masque

Put the white of an egg, a teaspoon of lemon juice, and the mashed pulp of a half avocado into a blender. In seconds, you should have a lovely green mixture. Wash your face and neck thoroughly, then apply masque evenly on those areas. Relax for 20 minutes; remove with tepid water and a face cloth. Follow with cold astringent or skin tonic.
ALMOND-MAYONNAISE SCRUB
Dry Skin Exfoliator
1/4 C. almonds
1/8 tsp. mayonnaise
Grind almonds in blender until they form fine almond meal. Whirl in mayonnaise. Gentle rub scrub onto your face, and leave in place 10 minutes. Rinse. Use a toner thereafter. Shelf Life: Refrigerate for 2-3 weeks.
Apple Cucumber Facial Mask
1/2 cucumber, peeled
1 egg white
1/2 teaspoon lemon juice
1/2 teaspoon lime juice
1/2 teaspoon apple mint leaves
1 drop lime essential oil
Combine all 5 ingredients in a food processor and process until smooth. Add the essential oil last and mix well. Refrigerate the mixture for 10 minutes.
Apply a layer to your clean face and neck area and leave it on for 20 minutes. Rinse well with warm water. Apple Cucumber Facial Mask is best when used immediately as the ingredients are perishable. The leftovers can be refrigerated in the coldest section of the refrigerator for up to 1-2 days but should be discarded after that
Apple Face & Neck Gelee
Yield: Approx. 2 applications
Ingredients:
4 teaspoons hot distilled water
1 teaspoon freshly juiced apple juice
1 teaspoon aloe vera gel
4 teaspoons vegetable glycerin
1 heaping teaspoon powdered pectin
Add the glycerin to the water/juice/gel combination and stir to fully incorporate. Add the pectin while the liquid remains quite warm (if it cools, place it in the microwave or a double boiler to raise the temperature) and use a hand held electric mixer to blend, or stir vigorously to dissolve the pectin. Once the pectin has fully dissolved, a light gel will begin to form. This may take from 15 minutes to 1/2 hour. Once the gel sets, Apple Face & Neck Gelee is ready to use. Apply the gel in a layer to your clean, damp face and neck. Rest for 15 minutes. Rinse with warm water and follow with a light moisturizer if desired. Leftover product can be stored in the refrigerator for about a week. Enjoy!! The shelf life of this product is necessarily limited by the fresh apple juice. It should be used within a few days after it is made.
